Garage door opener not working

What it looks like

The remote does nothing

You press the button and get silence. No click. No light. No movement.

The motor hums

You hear the opener try, but the door barely moves or does not move at all.

Lights blink or click

The opener light flashes. That can be a sensor, a lock setting, or the opener asking for a reset.

Wall button works, remote does not

The opener still has power. The remote, batteries, or programming is the first place to look.

It worked yesterday

Nothing looks broken. The door just stopped listening. That is a common opener or sensor issue.

Remote, motor, and sensors

Most “opener” calls are one of three things.

Remote

Dead batteries, a remote that lost its pairing, or a button that got stuck in a coat pocket.

Motor

The opener unit on the ceiling. It may hum, grind, or sit silent if it lost power or wore out.

Sensors

The two photo-eyes near the floor. If they cannot see each other, the door may refuse to close — or act like the opener is broken.

What you can check safely

Skip anything that means standing under a half-open door.

1 Try the wall button

If the wall button works, the opener still has power. The remote may just need batteries.

2 Check the outlet

Make sure the opener is plugged in. If you can reach it safely, confirm the outlet has power.

3 Look at the sensor lights

The two little boxes near the floor should show a steady light. Blinking or dark often means alignment. See door closes then reverses.

4 Leave a heavy door alone

If the door suddenly feels like a dead weight, it may be a broken spring. Do not force it.

Why does the wall button work but the remote does not?

That often means the opener still has power. Try fresh batteries first. If the wall button works and the remote does not, the remote may need to be reprogrammed.

Should I unplug it?

If you can reach the outlet safely, unplugging it is fine. Stay out from under the door. Do not force a door that feels unusually heavy.
